A Dreary Midnight Date
The legend himself, Edgar Allan Poe,
The man who immortalized the crow,
Sent me a short, purloined letter -
“Meet me at midnight at the House of Usher.”
We drank gaily from the cask of Amontillado.
He said “Oh Lenore, will you elope with me to Eldorado?”
Before I could agree, the Raven lurched upon his hat.
With an ominous caw, there it unceremoniously sh… umm sat.
He hop-frog jumped around “Eew…For the love of Ulalume, get off me!”
“I must take your leave, lovely Annabel Lee!”
I bristled at the misnomer but bid him adieu.
Our dreary midnight date ended as the bells chimed two.
Note: I love Edgar Allan Poe and no date with him can ever be dreary. Having said that, I’ve attempted to weave the titles of his famous short stories and poems in this Clerihew. They are the ones in bold and italics.
