A Moment Lost

Lonesome With tears for eyes And tattered rags for clothes A silhouette of starvation Stood she.  You want A warm caress A cuddly teddy bear Stars printed on a snug blanket Don’t you?  Poor waif!  Empathy surged I so wanted to help I extended my hand to her She smiled.  Mamma!  I want this doll!  Yes of course, my darling!  I turned away and left behind Despair.  Those eyes Lovely yet blank They haunt me to this day A moment lost can only cause  Regret.
