Heartstopper Volume 2

Alice Oseman takes Charles and Nick’s characters to the next level – both in terms of their relationship and personal journeys. I loved Volume 1 and dived into Heartstopper Volume 2 with a whole lot of enthusiasm, and the book lived up to my expectations.
Heartstopper Volume 2 picks up from the point where Volume 1 ended as a cliff hanger.
There is a whole lot of cuteness in this novel – the dialogues, graphics, and Nick’s dog Nellie is so adorable! But it is much more than a cute romance. Though love, family, and friendship occupy the core, there is a discussion of several important themes.
It was heart-warming to see Charlie surrounded by a supportive family and friends. I especially loved his sister Tori, and her appearances are magical and funny in a way! Charlie’s friends Tao, Aled, and Elle love him to bits. Nick’s introspection about his sexual identity and his coming out is beautifully explored.
Oseman explores Charlie and Nick’s vulnerabilities with a deep understanding and portrays them in a moving manner. She has created so many lovable characters in this volume. The world would be a better place if we could have more of them in real life.
The author also touches upon the fact there are other sexualities than gay and straight. There is more inclusion and a varied representation of people in this volume. The characters are straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual, and trans.
The subtle maturity in the character’s arcs and their handling of various conflicts coming their way is heart-warming and positive.
As in the previous volume, the illustrations complement the story perfectly.
I can’t wait to read Volume 3 and 4!
Filled with soft and tender moments, Heartstopper: Volume Two is a novel to cherish forever.
