Daddy Day Lessons

It was midnight, The flight was delayed. Ria hopped into the taxi she had booked. She sent the link to her husband whilst checking her pepper spray in her bag.
Fiddling with her phone, she changed her Whatsapp profile picture and uploaded her late Dad's picture.
Father's Day was around the corner, and her mind wandered to decades back. She felt a trip down her memory lane.

The car screeched to a halt. That evening they were driving around town and, her Dad stopped before a cake shop. He pulled out his wallet and handed it over to her, so she could pick up some pastries from the store. Mom was hesitant, “She is just seven.” but Dad smiled, "I trust her”. A simple statement and one she learned to value at a much later age. He meant more than trusting her with the safe keep of the wallet, the accountability for the money in it, the ability to look after herself, and the capability to make the correct choices. It was this same trust that left him unfazed when she drove home late from work.
A man far ahead of his times, her Dad truly believed that a woman is capable of everything. He believed in his only daughter learning everything. Be it folk dance, (which she loved to learn then) to stitching clothes, baking to short programs during summer breaks on topics from Public Speaking to self-defense tutorial.

Ria looked outside the window,
Gosh! Taxi is on an unfamiliar lane.
But the Black Belt champion remained calm, "Kya Hua?”
"Kuch Nahi memsahib, the highway is closed for repairs.”
As the taxi reached the destination, she whispered, "Dad, you will always be my hero, miss you. Happy Father's Day!"
