‘Leena, will you join us for a movie tonight,’ Aarti, one of Leena ‘s flatmate asked. ‘Whatever happens, I am going to eat a samosa today. This time of the season and no samosa,’ Leena was in her own thoughts. Without thinking Leena declined the offer and left for office. It was getting dark outside. Now she was regretting her decision. She should have joined for the movie. It was her birthday and Leena was in no mood to spend the rest of the evening alone. ‘I need to be careful before declining offers’ Leena was thinking as she picked up her umbrella and her handbag. Leena was new to the city with just a few acquaintances. Leena was in a grumpy mood as she came out of the office.  ‘Good evening, Mam,’ Leena nodded her head. The guard continued ‘Mam taxis are off road today and local bus services are bare minimum. You will have to walk back home.’ Leena thanked the guard and opened her umbrella. It had been raining continuously for the past two days. After a long sultry summer, monsoon season had arrived with a bang. First rain of the season and it had broken many records. Most of the roads were flooded with water and the roundabouts were worse. Though it was a modern city with wonderful drainage system, but heavy rain had taken its toll. Whole system seemed to have collapsed. Some of the roads had caved in. Life had been thrown out of gear.  Back in her hometown her birthday and first showers were celebrated with gaiety. Her mother used to prepare various delicacies to celebrate the occasion but Leena ‘s favorite was just… Rain was falling steadily but Leena was in her own thoughts. Her taste buds and smell buds seemed to be working overtime. She got a whiff of freshly made samosas and her feet automatically took her to the shop. She bought two samosas, but she could not resist the urge to eat them. The temptation was so great that she just couldn’t wait to reach home. So, she sat under a shed and opened the package and started eating. As her taste buds got satiated Leena started enjoying her surroundings. Rain was falling steadily. Pitter patter, pitter patter. People were hurrying back from work. Everything wore shining, bright look and seemed upside down, due to reflection in the water. City lights presented a spectacular gaze, dancing and glistening in the night rain. Cars were moving slowly. Leena stood on the sidewalk of the street and enjoyed the light show.  New energy filled inside her as she listened to rhythmic walk of the feet, soaking herself in the rain and the beauty of the city lights. Rain had a magical effect on her. She was drenched in water by the time she reached her apartment. She was still trying to find her keys when the door opened. Leena was in for a big surprise. *** Glossary: Samosa:  An Indian fried turnover filled with potatoes or vegetables and spices.     Penmancy gets a small share of every purchase you make through these links, and every little helps us continue bringing you the reads you love!
