Summer Solstice In Which: Pooh and Piglet Have a Feast

It was the day before summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet were in the meadow basking in the sun. Suddenly a brilliant idea crossed Pooh’s mind.

“The longest day requires the longest lunch! What do you say, Piglet?”

“Of course, Pooh!”

“Then let’s have a special lunch tomorrow. I will prepare plenty of dishes for the longest lunch we’ll ever have this year. No need to bring anything, leave the food to me,” said Pooh thumbing himself. His face beaming with pride, for he considered himself a great cook.

The following morning, Pooh got up earlier than usual and began preparing all the necessary ingredients. He was determined to surprise Piglet with the most sumptuous lunch he had ever tasted in his life. Pooh opened a book which had all his grandmother’s secret formulae, and made six different dishes. He finished cooking before the clock struck noon. To make sure nothing was amiss, he sampled all the dishes before Piglet arrived.

Heading towards Pooh’s house, Piglet felt very excited. He could already smell the sweet and flavorsome aroma emanating from Pooh’s place. He alternately walked and ran, in a hurry to partake in Pooh’s feast of the summer solstice.

Piglet was so eager he pushed the door open and exclaimed, “Let’s eat, Pooh. I’m so hungry!”

But there was no answer. He went to the kitchen where Pooh was seated in front of all the open and empty casseroles, rubbing his belly.

When Pooh started tasting the dishes one by one, he couldn’t contain himself and kept on eating until everything was over.

“Oh, dear! You are so stuffed, you need to lie down, my friend.” Piglet rushed to the bedroom and arranged the bed.

Pooh followed Piglet slowly but was so full he was unable to walk properly. He swayed, almost losing his balance and falling on the bed heavily. The impact caused Piglet, who was seated on the bed, to bounce in the air and out of the window.

Limping in pain, Piglet rushed back to the house to check if Pooh was alright. Dusting himself, he found Pooh asleep and snoring.

He shook his head and sighed. “Oh, dear! I must leave now.”

While going home, Piglet gathered some acorns and was content and happy to eat them.

Next day, Piglet was in his back garden talking to the flowers when he heard a knock on the door. Pooh arrived, carrying a pot in each hand. Behind him were Kanga and Roo, Tigger, Eeyore, Rabbit, Owl, and Christopher Robin, all carrying pots as well.

Pooh announced, “To the best friend in the whole world, I present to you, dear Piglet, the best dishes made by the best chef, Winnie-the-Pooh.”

Piglet grinned from ear to ear as he saw his friends arrange the delicious dishes on his dining table. He motioned them to sit with him. Together the friends had a great lunch full of laughter and lip-smacking-tastiness of Pooh’s cooking.
